Before starting 2050, we researched species conservation and climate change heavily, and stumbled upon many predictions made for the year 2050 that would come to fruition unless humanity made unprecedented changes. We started 2050 because we wanted to help make these changes the best way we knew how. Some of the predictions for 2050 are listed below: 

1. One million species will be pushed to extinction.

2. 150 million people will live below the high-tide level, requiring unprecedented human relocation and large scale infrastructure investments.

3. Global temperatures will rise 3 degrees Celsius, leading over half of the world’s population to experience more than 20 days of heat beyond the threshold of human survivability every year.

Our two main objectives for protecting rainforests are conserving animals species and fighting climate change. Rainforests have the highest number of animal species per square mile than any other land mass in the world. Rainforests also have an incredible ability to act as carbon sinks, with the Amazon rainforest alone containing the equivalent carbon amount to equal decades worth of human emissions.

Deforestation of these unique ecosystems is happening worldwide, we must act now.

2050 is partnered with Rainforest Trust to make our impact happen. Rainforest Trust is a non-profit organization that protects and conserves the rainforest. They have set a price per acre of rainforest averaged out across all their protection campaigns so that companies like 2050 can contribute a set dollar amount for an acre to be protected. Therefore, for every 2050 product sold, we donate a certain portion of the sale towards Rainforest Trust so an acre can be protected.

Our idea here is that wood is one of the most sustainable materials to make anything, including products and packaging, because it's a renewable resource (meaning it's theoretically impossible to run out). Yes, trees are cut down to produce the lumber for these products, but they are then replanted and the trees come back again. Our wood is also mainly bamboo, one of the fastest growing trees in the world, which means the turn around time for trees to be whole again is quick. We actually decided to use wood on purpose because it's so much better for than environment than the typical plastic pairs that are usually found out there.
